Case in Point 10

A professor whose specialty was classroom management was recruited to present a seminar on that topic for a group of twenty-seven educators. When the professor explained how to complete a coaching rubric using the professional development rubric as an example (see chapter 9), the participants noted that one of the criteria was, “Identified a relevant professional association (or associations).” The participants looked puzzled. Despite the fact that the group represented from three to twenty-six years of teaching experience, only two had heard of a professional organization and those two were guidance counselors. However, all twenty-seven participants belonged to the union.
